All people seek recognition of their reality and their dignity. Indeed, that reality and dignity must emerge in that mutual process. And it is the totality of the actions we take to achieve recognition that forms the motor of history. This is Hegel.
Political man thus seeks power as a form of recognition. To rule over others and to make them subjects endowed with their own thoughts. In other words, to achieve authority as legitimate power because that is what the people over whom one commands think. Something similar to Max Weber’s charismatic power. Using force to achieve this power is already a failure, the same as the master when he subjugates the slave, but then the recognition of the slave is no longer useful, he is not an equal. This is also Hegel.
Politics is the use of the word, the debate, to get what I defend approved. But, at the same time, listening to the other as an equal, a subject. Violence eliminates speech, it eliminates politics. This is not Hegel, it is Arendt.
